In 1646, Francesco Vignali, (Rivarolo Mantovano 1609-1659) then Maestro di Cappella of Casalmaggiore, published a singular collection of motets, from two to eight voices with continuo, theSacred Rumbles of Peace and War (Venice, Heredi del Gardano), dedicating it to the Decurions of the city. Constructed on the principle of alternating between Marian compositions "of peace" and others with a generally "excited" war theme, following the example of Monteverdi, the collection presents itself as a theatrical re-proposition, in a sacred key, ofMadrigals Warriors and Lovers by the Cremonese composer, published in 1638. Alongside Vignali's Motets, there will be works by composers with whom the Rivarolese certainly had dealings: Maurizio Cazzati (1616-1678) active in Bozzolo, the Cremonese Benedetto Pallavicino (c. 1550–1601), active in Sabbioneta and, of course, Claudio Monteverdi himself (1567–1643).
